Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice

This week's reflection is written by
Rev. Matthew J. Hillyard, OSFS

Recently we celebrated the summer solstice. This is the day each year when we have the most light of the year. It is one of my favorite days. I love the extra light and the longer days.

In the spiritual life, I find summer solstice to be a paradox. Even though it is the day we experience the most light, so often in life we seek the light of truth, the light of the next choice, the light of the next step.

Instead of the clarity of the brightest day of the year, so often we have only the light of the next step and the faith that our God who loves us is walking with us with whatever the light we have.

Celebrate the light of this longest day of the year! Celebrate the light that comes to us in the clarity of certain decisions. And celebrate the light that gives us the next steps or step in all our moments but let us also have confidence that the same God of light and love is also present to us in those moments that are darker and more doubtful than the clarity of the summer solstice.
