Pope Francis initiated a Year of Consecrated Life; what is your understanding of the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience?
They are twofold: One is to witness or special discipleship in following the Lord; secondly, it is our proclamation that Jesus is our savior and asks us to proclaim salvation.
Of the three vows, which do you see most connecting you to the people you serve?
I see all of these helping me to connect with others and those I serve in particular. If I live them faithfully I am transformed to bring the joy of the Gospel to others.
What gift do you see the Oblates, as religious men, bringing to the church and world?
The gift of joy and the gift of gentleness. These are gifts that tell others that God is near.
How does your commitment to a religious community impact your life?
In all I do! I am never not a religious even when I am not focusing on it. “Be who you are and be that well,” as a testament to the Master Craftsman who created us.
What is your greatest hope for religious life in the church?
That it does its part to engender the faith to others who do not believe.
What has been a surprise for you as you have lived as a religious?
How good and generous God is! God never stops blessing me for following him as a religious.
